Need crack tip SIFs? Don’t have the business case to buy a more expensive FEA package?
STOKE (STress intensity Or K Extractor) is a solver-agnostic SIF extractor, using a combination of Excel and an executable.
Ignoring expertise, there are two major barriers to crack tip analysis in finite element analysis: 1, software capability 2, cost Some FEA packages don’t have SIF or K extraction available. Others require an expensive license. It’s time to change those limitations. Structures aren’t getting any younger, cracks aren’t getting any shorter, and software’s not getting any cheaper.
What are the applications? Maybe you don't want to spend $30k on a software that has SIF extraction capabilities. Or your $20k software doesn't have SIF extraction. Perhaps your specific solution choice doesn't offer SIFs as an option. Maybe you made your own FEA solver but don't have SIFs programmed in. Or maybe you're just a curious nerd.
Here it is in action:
An ERSI round robin was conducted in 2021 to compare various SIF extractions against software and methods. A major difference in my work was that I used Siemens NX and Simcenter Nastran, which has no built-in SIF extraction.

As you can see, STOKE is in the ballpark (NX STOKE in the chart). It's important to note that for LEFM and SIF extraction, the results are extremely sensitive to mesh construction
